The Church of His Presence – 3-3-19 – Pastor Mark Biel
The title is not referring to John Kilpatricts church in Daphne Alabama by that name – although
it is a great church – The title is meant to prompt us to consider if this church –
Conneaut 1 st Assembly is a church of His presence – does His presence dwell here – of course that
determined by whether or not we Are we a people of His presence? If so am I a carrier of God’s
Humm can we ponder that notion today? Have you given much thought to what the Lord means
when He says Jude 20 “…build yourself up in your most holy faith…” How do we do that?
Especially in the world we live in! The world is definitively becoming the place of bad news – not
only the amount of bad news but the degree of bad news.
There are signs in the skies – wars and rumors of wars volcanoes – Earthquakes, tornadoes,
draughts and starvation, tsunami waves – auctions that sell boys and girls, Islamic extremists who
dismember people slowly, decapitates people quickly and tortures people for enjoyment. There are
robots – 5 G technology and AI
We see Israel surrounded by nations that hate Jews– firing missiles – fire bombs from kites and
threatening to bring even a nuclear engagement
– Wow sounds like the words of Jesus
Luke 21:25-26 There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in
anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. Men will faint from terror, apprehensive
of what is coming on the world,
Luke 21:20, 28 “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its
desolation is near. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because
your redemption is drawing near.” YIKES!!!!
WOW those are fairly alarming signs that some say happen every year – while there is some truth to
that the number – the intensity and the collective nature of all these things happening makes these
warnings that much more alarming.
At least it ought to serve as a wakeup call to the church that indeed the imminent return of Christ is
more imminent today than ever before.
Notice the following scriptures as they reference
the last days warnings concerning what is going to be seen in the church
2 Timothy 3:1, 5, 7 There will be terrible times in the last days…(people in the church) having a
form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them…. They are always learning
but never able to acknowledge the truth.
In todays context its like carrying a big KJB and being prejudice – or being in church every Sunday
but on Monday – still living out a terribly selfish contentious marriage

2 Timothy 4:3-4 The time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their
own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears
want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.
Jude writes to the early church
Jude 4
Some ungodly people have wormed their way into your churches, saying that God’s marvelous grace
allows us to live immoral lives. The condemnation of such people was recorded long ago, for they
have denied our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
The ordination of same sex couples for clergy is an example of this – Presbyterians, Lutherans,
Catholics, Episcopalians, even the Methodists who were once recognized as a Holiness movement
–have capitulated to the politically correct mantra of our culture.
They say –
surely God is love and He loves unconditionally – His grace is more than enough to cover my
lifestyle – after all God made me like this. therefore we can live diametrically opposed to the known
– biblically revealed will of God
Or men and women who recreationally delve into the dark and perverse world of pornography
whether alone or together – for whatever reason call upon the grace of God as a universal get out
of hell card.
Look it is one thing to fall into temptation – give into temptation or be caught in an unguarded
moment and then come to your senses by the Holy Spirit’s presence and conviction – repent – stop
turn around and go in the opposite direction –
and another thing to habitually exercise a license to enter into perversity all the while claiming
God’s amazing grace.
If I might take another moment – we can excuse ourselves for every carnal sinful thing by using the
grace card. For instance: do any of the following belong in one proclaiming to be a Christian?
Angry outbursts – no – but self control – yes
Bitterness – no but forgiveness – yes
Selfish moods & attitudes – no – but kindness – yes
Sarcastic rude words – no but words that build up – yes
Rugged independence – no but communion – yes
Spiritual indifference – no but passionate service – yes
the list is endless. God is no fool – He knows who are really His and who are the pretenders.
2 Tim 2:19 “The Lord knows those who are his,” and “All who belong to the Lord must turn away
from evil.”
We learned last week – all of us need help! We cannot live for Christ – be Christ-like – project His
glory with out the help of the Holy Spirit
So at the risk of sounding like a broken record – Jesus says
Acts 1:4 “…wait for the gift My Father promised…”
Acts 2:17 “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Note that Jesus is going to do
Now lets look briefly are what we are supposed to do
Jude 20-21 Dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit.
Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to
eternal life.

SEE THE BOLD WORDS – Build yourselves – pray – Keep yourselves and wait
Jude’s admonition appears to present a viable model for just how we are to be increasing effective
in sharing the good news in an increasingly bad news world.
Pray in the Holy Spirit – that phrase must not only be troublesome to unbelievers who are clueless to
what that might mean – but also the trouble it presents to the church that refuses to accept what it
means. Having a prayer language is a powerful tool of building yourself up in faith.
The word picture I believe the Holy Spirit helped me to see was that of a house – every house
needs a firm foundation the block and mortar are like the Word and the Spirit – the house is really
intended by God to be a temple – a place for His Spirit to dwell.
1 Cor 6:19-20
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have
received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with
your body.
Eph 2:21-22 – In Christ the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in
the Lord. And in Him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by His
Building yourself up in your most holy faith is allowing the Holy Spirit to craft you into being a people
of His Presence. We learned last week God knows the plans He has for us – well He plans to
have His presence dwell in your temple – in you and you and you!
Listen – the reason Adam was created in the first place was to manifest the glory of God’s presence
upon the earth! When through sin – God’s glory being manifest through Adam disappeared –
Spiritual darkness covered the earth that God had determined ought to be filled with His glory.
God’s plan was that through Christ the blood bought church would be holy and by means of the Holy
Spirit the glory of that holiness would once again be manifest over the earth.
My body – your body – A Place of God’s Presence and Power! Holiness is not a natural part of the
human home – Holiness requires a supernatural partner – The blood of the Lamb is required for us
to be Holy and the power of the Spirit is required for us to reveal it. We need the Holy Spirit
Certainly Praying in the Holy Spirit includes such things as waiting – musing and meditating on the
word – then according to the leading of the Holy Spirit begin to pray in accordance with the
perceived will of God.
Revelation and insights provided by the Holy Spirit are critical to building yourself up in your most
holy faith but Paul instructs us in
Rom 8:2 “… the Spirit helps us in our weakness…”
The gifted Chinese preacher, Watchman Nee, used to read through the New Testament once a
month. His motto – “No Bible – no breakfast!” If we followed that motto in America, a lot of Christians
would go hungry!
The Word of God and prayer go together in spiritual growth. If all we do is read and study the
Bible, we may have a great light bulb but no power to light it up.
You may be more the wise but the world will remain in darkness.

On the other hand if you have a great prayer life filled with the Holy Spirit – praying in tongues-
full of joy and faith in fact you may even experience great zeal especially in your expression of
worship –
but you no longer read the word of God or heed the word of God – your bulb would blow up –
leaving both you and the world in darkness

Evangelist Billy Sunday used to give his converts three rules for success in the Christian life.
Each day – read the Bible and let God talk to them.
Each day – pray in the Holy Spirit and discuss things with God concerning every matter of ones
thoughts, speech and conduct; in other words, they were to talk to God. And the third step Each
day – witness to others about Jesus.
This “building process” in the Christian life involves the Word of God, the Spirit of God, prayer
and application . Build – pray Keep and wait
When Jude wrote “Keep yourselves in the love of God.” – Sounds like the Words of Christ Himself in
John 15:9-10 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey
my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain
in his love.
Remaining and obeying are inextricably linked – to Keep the love of God requires that we live
the love of God.
It takes more than ecstatic feelings of love to make a successful marriage – and likewise
obedience is needed if our house is going to be the holy Temple where the presence of God
God’s love is a holy love and that requires a decision that goes beyond the touchy feely stuff of
Ps 97:10
Let those who love the LORD – hate evil, for He guards the lives of His faithful ones and delivers
them from the hand of the wicked.
We live in the land of bad news and darkness – wickedness covers the earth but God has seen fit
to preserve a remnant – to cast the light of His glory upon the darkness of this earth. To bring
hope to the helpless – healing to the wounded – strength to the weary – to bring love to the
abandoned and life to the dead!
God will guard us in the midst of our enemies and deliver us – but – We must hate evil not coddle
it – not play with it – not endure it – but – confront it and remove it by– The Holy Spirit is not
willing to cohabitate with evil – We must hate evil!
Listen we are no match for the power of sin – Only through the power of the Holy Spirit can our
temple ever be filled with Holiness and glory and revealed to a world waiting. The agony of our
experience is that we fail to discern the power of sin –
Only through the blood of Jesus can sin and darkness be eradicated and only by the Spirit can
our witness manifest His glory!

I do not want to bring disgrace upon the Lord whose blood was shed for me Certainly I do not
want to wound my wife or bring the pain of shame upon my children or the this great church but
I am no match for demonic strategies designed for my destruction – * We need the Holy Spirit –
God will guard and deliver me from all my enemies – but we must hate evil!
I want to live with answered prayer as part of my testimony – I want to live as witness to God’s grace
and mercy – I want my temple to be holy – my light to be bright and the power of the Holy Spirit to
flow unhindered against the powers and principalities of darkness! These are the last days – I am
looking for Jesus to return and soon!
But my friends our lives are being increasingly filled with worldly stuff – leaving us with precious little
time or substance for God. We will never keep up with the neighbors – we will never find fulfillment in
the pursuits that entice the world.
The manifest glory of God is what you were intended to be and it can not happen if your temple is
filled with worldly stuff
We are to be a people of Gods Presence –
2000 years ago Satan laughed as he orchestrated people living darkness to tear the body of Christ
apart. 2000 years later – he is still laughing as the body of Christ continues to be torn apart.
He is tearing apart marriages through our sin nature but God wants us to operate with our new nature
and by doing so our marriages are restored! He tears apart churches because of the sin nature but if
churches will live by their new nature – God will restore those churches if we allow the Holy Spirit to
lead us.
2 Peter 1:3-4
His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of
Him who called us by His own glory and goodness.
Through these He has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may
participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
2 Peter 1:5-8
5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;
6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness;
and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. 8 For if you possess these
qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your
knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus is coming! Build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. Keep
yourselves in God’s love as you wait upon the Lord! If you do then this church will
Reflect the glory of His presence by
Being a living sacrifice – Holy and acceptable Rom 12:1
Being Spirit filled Ephesians 5:18
Bear Spiritual fruit Galatians 5:22
Operate in Spiritual gifts 1 Cor 12:7 & 11
Reaching the lost – Acts 13:47
Discipling the found – Matthew 28:19

Forgiving the unforgivable Matthew 18: 21-22
Loving the unlovable John 13:34 and 35
